How SAGD works at a system level

Process role

Steam reduces bitumen viscosity underground, avoiding excavation of the reservoir.

How the system fits together

Produced fluids are separated at surface and much of the water is treated for reuse as steam.

Environmental and reclamation context

SAGD generally disturbs less continuous land than open-pit mining but requires substantial energy for steam and creates well pads, roads, pipelines and facility footprints.

What to keep in mind

The balance between land footprint, water recycle and energy/emissions is central to understanding SAGD.
