Process role
Suitable soils and other reclamation materials are identified, salvaged and either stockpiled or directly placed on areas being reclaimed.
How the system fits together
Direct placement can preserve more of the material’s useful physical and biological characteristics than long storage.
Environmental and reclamation context
These materials later support reconstructed soils, vegetation and drainage systems.
What to keep in mind
Salvage does not guarantee ecological recovery, but losing suitable material early can make later reclamation harder.
