Process role
Bitumen is a very heavy petroleum material that does not flow like conventional light crude under reservoir conditions.
How the system fits together
Alberta’s Athabasca, Cold Lake and Peace River areas contain the major deposits.
Environmental and reclamation context
Depth and geology determine whether development uses surface mining or in situ recovery, which also changes the dominant land, water and emissions impacts.
What to keep in mind
The resource is large, but recoverability, economics, environmental obligations and regulation determine what is actually developed.
High-level industrial education only. Oil sands mines, thermal wells, extraction plants, upgraders and tailings facilities are hazardous regulated operations; this site does not provide operating setpoints, chemical recipes or equipment procedures.
