Process role
Mining removes overburden and ore, then separates bitumen at a surface extraction plant.
How the system fits together
In situ projects heat or otherwise mobilize bitumen underground and bring produced fluids to surface facilities.
Environmental and reclamation context
Mining creates larger direct land disturbance and tailings; thermal in situ avoids open pits but uses substantial energy and creates roads, well pads and pipelines.
What to keep in mind
Neither pathway is impact-free; the relevant trade-offs are different.
High-level industrial education only. Oil sands mines, thermal wells, extraction plants, upgraders and tailings facilities are hazardous regulated operations; this site does not provide operating setpoints, chemical recipes or equipment procedures.
