Frequently asked questions

Are all oil sands projects open-pit mines?

No. Shallow deposits can be mined while most deeper resources are recovered in situ using wells.

Does in situ mean no environmental footprint?

No. It generally avoids large open pits but uses well pads, roads and pipelines, and thermal projects require substantial energy for steam.

Are oil sands tailings already reclaimed?

Some tailings areas have been reclaimed, but the sector still has a very large outstanding tailings and mine-water reclamation task.

Is reclamation real or only a future promise?

Both realities exist: Alberta requires reclamation and genuine reclaimed areas exist, while much larger areas remain active or under future reclamation obligations.
